Pros And Cons Of Allowing Customers To Pick Their Own Pumpkins

Blog

If you're a farmer who grows pumpkins with the intention of selling a lot of your supply shortly before Halloween, one of the things that you'll want to think about is whether customers can pick their own pumpkins in your fields or whether you'll do the picking and have the pumpkins on a cart for people to browse. There are some advantages and disadvantages of each idea, and considering them in regards to your specific situation should indicate how it's best to proceed.

Pro: Offers A Unique Experience

A family will have a lot of fun walking up and down the aisles of your pumpkin patch to find the perfect pumpkin. Children will be thrilled with the selection around them and  will search long and hard to find a pumpkin that is big or the perfect size for carving. When the options for buying a pumpkin are visiting a big-box store and selecting a pumpkin from a bin or visiting your farm and browsing through the field, many local families will select the latter.

Con: Chance Of Damage To Plants

Whenever you have people walking through your pumpkin patch, there's a risk that some of them won't be careful. While you'd like to think that the average customer would be mindful about plants underfoot, not everyone will be this tactful. This can be especially true with children who are excited and running. There's a chance that some of your plants will get stepped on, tripped over, and otherwise damaged when people walk through the fields.

Pro: The Option For Other Attractions

If you're interested in setting up other attractions at your farm, they may appeal to those who already plan to visit to buy pumpkins. For example, you might want to cut a maze into a cornfield. This can be a popular attraction for families in the fall, and lots of the people who visit to buy a pumpkin may want to walk through the maze. If you charge even a nominal fee per family, you may dramatically increase your revenue.

Con: Potential For Liability Issues

You'll want to contact your insurance company to inquire about having people visit your farm, especially if they'll be walking through the fields. This uneven terrain could potentially lead to an injury, and you don't want to end up with legal issues just because you decided that it would be fun for your customers to pick their own pumpkins.
